Auditory (hearing)

Characteristics
  • Inattentive to visual tasks
  • May not like art, drawing, or coloring
  • Omits words when copying
  • May complain eyes are bothering him or her
  • Holds materials close to face, moves head from side to side, and lays head on desk
  • Doesn't remember well information read silently
  • Remembers information from discussions
  • Knows hundreds of TV commercials and song lyrics
  • Likes to talk
  • Maybe a poor speller on written work
  • May not notice new things in the classroom
  • Has difficulty with map or diagram activities

Strategies
  • Change visual material to auditory using someone's voice (including the students's)
  • Give oral directions
  • Teach the student to talk through tasks
  • Provide auditory or rhyming cues
  • Use a ruler, marker,or index card while reading or completing paper/pencil tasks to draw eyes to visual tasks and keep the place
  • Get his or her attention before giving instructions
  • Use jingles, catchy stories, mnemonic strategies,cheers,or songs.
  • Use a ruler for drawing lines on a matching activity
  • Allow student to read aloud quietly
  • Use a phonics approach to new words
  • Allow oral responses
